Nageswaraswamy Temple, Kumbakonam is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva  in the guise of Nagaraja, the serpent king. Also known as “Koothandavar Kovil”. Devotees who have ragu dosham in their horoscope visit this temple and participate in the Abiseka puja.



History of Nageswarar Temple

Aditya Chola constructed this temple during the 12th century. It stands as a great marvel of Chola architecture, building technology and astronomy. Nageswarar swamy is the main deity of the temple Nageswaran. The deity is Linga (form of God Shiva).


 

Architecture of Nageswarar Temple

The temple shows early Chola art in its best form particularly in the form of human figures. Nageswaran temple is world renowned for its architecture. The temple is built in such a way that it allows sunlight to fall on the sanctum only during the months of April or May, The temple consists of two Gopurams in the eastern and western directions.

 

 

 

 

 

Nageswarar Temple Festivals

The main festival of the temple is the Theerthavari when Lord comes to Mahamaham tank happen once in 12 years. Other festivals of the temple are Purattasi Navarathri in August-September, Margazhi Tiruvadhirai in December-January and Panguni Peru Vizha in March-April.

Nageswarar temple is about 2 kms  from Kumbakonam Central Bus stand in the center of kumbakonam.  It is very near to City center and has easy access from railway station and bus stand. The bus stop is very near to the Temple and there are lot of buses available for this temple get down at  Diamond Hall / Theater just 3 mins walks to reach the temple.
