About Thiyagaraja Temple
Thyagaraja Temple is a Shiva temple, located in the town of Thiruvarur in Tamil Nadu, India. Shiva is worshiped as Moolanathar, and is represented by the lingam. Daily poojas are offered to his idol referred to as Maragatha lingam. His consort Parvathi is depicted as Kondi.
History of Thiruvarur Thiyagaraja Temple
Vanmikanathar represents the Moolavar while the shrine dedicated to Thiyagaraja is the better known shrine in the temple.
The temple is believed to have been initiated with a large complex by the Pallavas during the 7th century. Contemporary history of the temple dates back to the time of the Medieval Cholas. An inscription dated in the 20th regnal year of Rajendra I beginning with introduction “Tirumanni valara” is found on the north and west walls of the Thyagaraja shrine.It gives a list of gifts including a number of jewels and lamps to the god veedhividankar.It records that the temple was built in stone in the regnal years of the king by Anukkiyar Paravai Nangaiyar.Besides the same lady liberally endowed gold for plating and gilding parts of the vimana,the entrance and the four sides of the shrine.Copper was also donated for plating the doors, corbels of the pillars of the mandapa in front of the shrine.
Architecture of Thiruvarur Thiyagaraja Temple
The vast temple complex at Thiruvarur with several shrines has many spacious mandapams and towering gopurams. The temple has a lot of halls, with six of them being the most prominent. Rajendra Chola hall, also called Sababathi hall houses the museum of the temple.

- Chithiria festival in April-May are the important festivals of the temple and the Pradosha Puajas are devotionally performed drawing huge crowds
- Diwali, Pongal the Makar Sankranthi, Tamil and English New Year days are also observed with special pujas
Chariot festival of Thiruvarur Thiyagaraja Temple (Thiruvarur Thaer)
The annual chariot festival of the Thygarajaswamy temple is celebrated during April – May, correspondong to the Tamil month of Chitrai. The event is attended by lakhs of people from all over Tamil Nadu. The chariot festival is followed by the “Theppam”, meaning float festival. The chariot is the largest of its kind in Asia and India weighing 300 tonne with a height of 90 feet. The chariot comes around the four main streets surrounding the temple during the festival.

Abishekam details: Abishekam is not performed to Lord Thiagaraja but to the Maragatha Linga (precious emerald Linga known as Veedhi Vidanga Linga believed to have been worshipped earlier by Indira) at 8.30 a.m., 11.00 a.m. and at 7.00 p.m. each day.
This temple has many uniqueness-like daily Pradhosha Pooja performed between 4.30 and 6.00pm-whereas in all other Siva temples this pooja done every 15 days only.

You can easily get regular buses and trains to Thiruvarur from other places of the State. It is walkable distance from Bus stand and Railway station. There are lot of bus facilities available. It is located on Tiruvarur main town. Conveniently located from Kumbakonam. If you are planning to take the bus, it will take 1.5 hours. Bus stand is not that close to the temple – need a town bus or auto.
