Srinivasa Perumal Temple

Papanasam Srinivasa Perumal Temple:  Apart from the Shiva temple covered previously, Papanasam also houses Shri Pankajavalli sametha Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple.  This is on the Tanjavur Kumbakonam main road.  Though this is an old temple, it is relatively a small one.  The eastern entrance is having a three tiered gopuram which was constructed only in 2007. The last consecration took place in 2014. ( Papanasam also happens to be the birth place of Shri Papanasam Sivan, the well known Carnatic Music composer and Sri Sri Ravi Shankar of the Art of Living Foundation).

History of Srinivasa Perumal Temple

Srinivasa Perumal Temple at Papanasam is assembled by the Cholas Kings few hundred years back. It has thousand years old history. One can easily depict this from the architectural design. So naturally there are lots of story one could get to know about this holy temple.

Architecture

In the temple, people see the huge tower like structures. But the central God is Srinivasa and there are lots of devotees visit the place every day. As it is also very old, the attraction of this holy building is magnificent. There are many chambers available inside the temple, important places for the idols and structures installed there.  There are lot of inscriptions in this temple and a detailed research was conducted on the origins of this temple.  According to their findings, originally this was a Shiva Temple ( Visveswara Deva) constructed in bricks.  During the 15th and 16th centuries, when the Vijayanagar Kings re-constructed the temple, it was converted into Srinivasa Perumal temple as the Vijayanagar Kings generally preferred constructing/renovating Vishnu temples. The style of the temple is imaginative and there is no doubt about it.
